How to Save Your Picture

You usually save pictures from the internet by right-clicking on them and picking Save Picture from the menu. This does not work when the picture is in a Java Applet. Most of the images on this site are Java applets.

If you are using Microsoft Windows® or NT®, you can save a picture from an applet by following these annoying directions. You should first find the program called Paint or MSPaint. It is part of the usual Microsoft distribution. You need it to Paste a screen capture--Photoshop does not do this.

If you have an applet with a picture you want to save:

1. Move the browser border to just show the applet you want to save. Make sure the browser is the active window (with the dark caption) before the next step.

2. Hold down an ALT key and press the Print Screen key. Print Screen is usually right of the F12 key, at the top of the keyboard.

3. Open the paint program, and select Paste from the Edit menu. If the program asks if you want the image enlarged, answer Yes.

4. The browser, with the Java applet in it, should show up in the Paint program. Click on the pencil or brush icon to get rid of the dotted outline (the selection outline).

5. Click on the dotted rectangle icon. Select (drag a dotted rectangle around) the part of the image you want to save.

6. Press Copy on the Edit menu, to copy the selection to the clipboard.

7. On the Image menu, press Attributes. On the dialog that appears, set both the width and height to small numbers, like 3. Then press OK on the dialog. The picture should disappear.

8. Now press Paste on the Edit menu, like step 3. And again answer Yes when it asks if you want the image enlarged. The image you want to save should appear.

9. Press Save As.. on the File menu to save the image. You probably want Save As Type to be 24-Bit Bitmap on the Save As dialog. Change the name to whatever you want, and press Save to save the image. The image is saved as a Windows BMP image.
